Last week, the Government made a pledge to boost tourism and spending once again with a £1.4 billion plan.

As part of the plan, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that VAT will drop from 20% to 5% for six months from Wednesday, with things like food, drink and days out included in the cut.

The cut will run until January 12, 2021. It will include takeaways and meals out as well as hotel, B&B and campsite stays, reports the Mirror.

A VAT cut will only be available where places choose to pass it on, though.

"These changes are being brought in as an urgent response to the coronavirus pandemic to support businesses severely affected by forced closures and social distancing measures," a Government spokesman said.

Jane Pendlebury, the CEO of Hospa, the Hospitality Professionals Association, said: "The reduction in VAT is absolutely massive news for the hospitality industry."
